Two weeks after being cut loose by the Philadelphia Eagles, the Houston Texans revealed on Wednesday that Devin White, a former All-Pro linebacker, had signed a contract with the organization.
The timing of the relocation to Houston is favorable for both sides. Christian Harris is on injured reserve because of a calf injury, leaving the Texans with a diminished linebacker corps. Azeez Al-Shaair (knee) and Henry To’oTo’o (concussion) were both sidelined for the team’s most recent game versus Green Bay. White brings to Houston a history of playing at a high level and Super Bowl experience. He became one of the league’s most promising young linebackers during his five-year tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He earned second-team All-Pro recognition for his outstanding 2020 season, which included a Super Bowl triumph and 140 combined tackles and nine sacks. In 2021, he was selected to the Pro Bowl after that performance. However, White’s efficiency has decreased, especially in run defense, even if he has maintained great statistical production over the last two seasons. He eventually left Tampa Bay as a result of this decline, and his time in Philadelphia was a failure. White was one of the NFL’s most explosive young defenders in his early career, and the Texans hope he can regain that form.
