The spectrum of emotional projection that Beth Hart possesses is unmatched by any other female singer, or even a male singer, in my opinion. Her life has been challenging, and each song reflects her struggles.
She is a tremendously strong performer who gives every song her best effort, which leaves the audience exhausted yet completely satisfied.
This is yet another outstanding record in a stellar career. Twelve songs that each have a distinct style and highlight a different aspect of her wide spectrum of life events, including both the joys and the trials.
Regarding the title track, Beth states, “This is a true story. At one point, I was feeling down and sobbing a lot while sitting on the couch when Scott remarked, ‘Hey, do you need a hug?’ He replied, “You still got me,” in response to my statement that I had nothing left to love. Hold for a second; I’ll be right back, I said. I utilized those phrases and his delivery when I went downstairs. Even if someone you love responds to what you say, you still have me. It’s accurate. I still have everything if I still have him.
Her voice is strong and full-throated throughout the album, which starts with the rocky opener “Savior With A Razor” (featuring Slash), moves into the Brechtesque “Never Underestimate A Gal,” and ends with the huge emotional explosion of “Don’t Call The Police,” which I believe is going to be a great live number, or the sweet and passionate “Wonderful World.”
She is at the stage of her career when she can embrace a wide range of styles and pull them off in a way that only she can pull off.
Wonderful.
