NRL legends launch devastating Kangaroos jab, emphasizing Reece Walsh and Kalyn Ponga facts.
The absence of the game’s three most marketable players might be a significant loss for Australia.

The Kangaroos face Tonga on Friday, just two weeks after the NRL grand final, and the absence of superstars Reece Walsh, Kalyn Ponga, and Nathan Cleary has sparked questions about the international calendar. On Tuesday, Corey Parker, Greg Alexander, Andrew Voss, and Josh Mansour all questioned the hoopla surrounding Australia’s match against Tonga on Friday, citing the lack of fanfare.

Playing for Australia was considered the pinnacle of rugby league, and every player wanted to represent his country. Except that a handful of superstars have been spurned or withdrawn from consideration owing to injury or tiredness. Cleary and back-rower Liam Martin have decided to  miss the Kangaroos games due to injury.

The lack of superstars like as Reece Walsh, Kalyn Ponga, and Nathan Cleary may have reduced the enthusiasm around the Kangaroos’ Pacific Championship campaign.

Cleary has not played for the Kangaroos since 2022, due to injuries sustained after the grand final. Cameron Munster, Storm’s five-eighth, also ruled himself out following the NRL Grand Final. On Tuesday, a listener on SEN Radio said that the international calendar has been diluted because the Kangaroos team is weakened due to injuries and players prioritizing club above country.

And perhaps the two most exciting fullbacks in the game are yet to play for their country because they have not been selected. Walsh was injured near the conclusion of the season, as Kevin Walters’ Broncos failed to finish in the top eight.

Regardless, Walsh has played for the Maroons in all three State of Origin games this season and may have the most viewers on television. This week, Australian Rugby League Chairman Peter V’landys stated that Walsh’s star power is unprecedented in the NRL. Ponga is similar.

The electrifying fullback controversially declared himself out of contention following the NRL season to focus on his club’s pre-season. After facing criticism for ignoring the Kangaroos, the fullback reversed his choice.

Despite Ponga’s availability, coach Mal Meninga chose Dylan Edwards instead. Following an outstanding State of Origin series, the Penrith Panthers fullback might make a case for becoming the finest No.1 in the game in 2024.
