After their squad destroyed Oklahoma in the most recent Red River Rivalry game on Saturday, Texas learned a lesson from Baker Mayfield.
No. 18 Oklahoma was crushed 34-3 by No. 1 Texas at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas.
During the first three drives of the game, Texas failed to score, demonstrating the strength of Oklahoma’s defense. However, the Longhorns exploded for a second-quarter lead of 21 points, securing a commanding edge they would never give up.
A few Texas players made the decision to try their hand at Mayfield after the game. In the center of the field, Longhorns linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. spread out a Mayfield Oklahoma jersey. Barryn Sorrell, a teammate, placed a Texas school flag directly on top of Mayfield’s former jersey.
When his Oklahoma team defeated Ohio State on the road seven years ago, Mayfield memorably did something similar. At Ohio Stadium, Mayfield placed a flag directly over Ohio State’s midfield emblem, but the Oklahoma alumnus didn’t stick one through anyone’s jersey.
A few days later, Mayfield finally apologized for the gesture. Whether Hill and Sorrell will feel compelled to follow suit is still up in the air.
It’s possible that the Texas players were seeking retribution for an offensive pregame act committed by an Oklahoma player.
