Middlesbrough legend Gareth Southgate reveals coaching return plans after England
Gareth Southgate has offered an update on his plans to return to coaching after leaving his role as England manager
Middlesbrough legend Gareth Southgate says he has no plans to return to management in the next year, as he gives his body and mind time to recover after his eight-year tenure as England boss.
The former Boro captain and manager left his role as Three Lions boss after this summer’s European Championships. It saw him lead England to a second major tournament final, while he also guided England to a World Cup semi final during his time in charge.
Lee Carsley is currently in charge of the England side on an interim basis following Southgate’s departure, with the Boro legend instead taking on a role as a UEFA technical observer for the 2024-25 campaign. That role sees him analyse and compile reports of Champions League games from a coaching perspective.

As far as a return to the dugout is concerned, however, Southgate continues to be linked with Manchester United, with current boss Erik ten Hag under pressure. Currently 14th in the Premier League, Manchester United have made their worst start to a new season in 35 years.
But asked his plans to return to management while speaking at a European Club Association event in Athens, Southgate updated: “I won’t coach in the next year, for sure. I’m certain of that. I need to give myself time to make good decisions. When you come out of a really big role you need to give your body time, you need to give your mind time. I’m fortunate that there are lots of opportunities presenting themselves.”
