The Cavaliers have suspended Andrew Bynum. Wait, what?

How’s this for some unexpected news? The Cleveland Cavaliers announced on Saturday morning that they have suspended Andrew Bynum indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team. He will not play in Saturday’s game against the Boston Celtics and will not participate in team activities until further notice.

“Cavaliers center Andrew Bynum has been suspended for conduct detrimental to the team, Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant announced today. Bynum did not travel with the team to Boston last night for the team’s game this afternoon at 1:00 p.m. vs. the Celtics and has been excused from all team activities indefinitely. His status will be updated as appropriate.”

I have no idea what Bynum did to warrant being suspended indefinitely, but it could really be a number of things. It could be something relatively small that will blow over in a few days or it could be something much much bigger. If it’s the latter, it certainly complicates the Cavaliers’ decision at the January 7th deadline to guarantee the rest of Bynum’s contract for the year.

As Sam Vecenie outlined, Bynum’s play has been rough so far. Despite his immense potential, it’s hard to argue that he’s currently helping the team. The Cavaliers have to decide on January 7th if they want to guarantee the remaining $6 million on his deal this year.

He makes a good point. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

And…this just got incredibly depressing.
