Dallas Cowboys BREAKING: Dak Prescott Contract Move Frees Up Cap Space

Dallas Cowboys BREAKING: Dak Prescott Contract Move Frees Up $4 Million in Cap Space

FRISCO – The Dallas Cowboys have made a contract move on Dak Prescott. No, not “the contract move’‘ … but a little immediate help nevertheless.

There is a great deal of tumult right now in Cowboys Nation regarding the Cowboys MVP quarterback, as we discuss in the Fish Report and the Fish Podcast below. And this move does not solve all of that. But …

ESPN is first to report that the team has converted a $5 million roster bonus due Prescott into a signing bonus in order to create cap space.

The space added is $4 million, which will help the Cowboys finalize their recent minor deals. (See the Cowboys Free Agency Scorecard here). The move also involves adding void years to Prescott’s contract … which can be important as the two sides negotiate over what to do long-term with his contract, which is due to expire after this season.

Prescott’s cap number for the 2024 season is now $55.455 million. … down from the bloated $59.4 million.

Those void years (now running through 2028) can be problematic if Dak remains unsigned all year and becomes a free agent in the spring of 2025. That will be unfortunate if, for instance, he’s not here in 2025 even though his cap number will still be about $40 million.

The stated plan, though: An extension for Prescott – which he predicts “will happen” – that would make the void years moot. Stay tuned.
