Danny Preston announces Grimsby Town departure, latest on Kyle Bennett and rules on Jay Matete recall
The defender is set to return to Nottingham Forest after announcing his departure from Blundell Park on Twitter
Danny Preston has announced he will return to Nottingham Forest as his loan at Grimsby Town is cut short.
The defender joined the Mariners in the summer on a season-long deal from Forest, having been signed by former manager Ian Holloway.
But, with Paul Hurst signing Sam Habergham and another two loanees set to arrive on deadline day in Joe Adams and Jake Eastwood, Preston is set to head back to the County Ground.
The 20-year-old announced his departure from Blundell Park on Twitter, and despite deleting the post soon after, he is expected to head back to his parent club.
“Unfortunately my time @officialgtfc has come to an end, I’d like to thank all the players and staff for making me feel so welcome from day one!” Preston tweeted.
“And to all the fans that have stuck with us while times are tough, thank you! I wish you all the best for the rest of the season!”
While Preston is set to head back to Forest, fellow Town loanee Kyle Bennett looks set to remain with the Mariners beyond the window.
The midfielder is set to be out injured with a hamstring problem for at least the next four weeks, and with Adams and Eastwood arriving, Town will have six loan players on their hands, with only five allowed to be named in a matchday squad.
Hurst though doesn’t expect Bennett to be recalled by parent club Bristol Rovers.
“I don’t think there’s any thought of that happening realistically,” Hurst told GrimsbyLive.
“We’d be naive to think Bristol Rovers would just say ‘yeah, that’s alright’.
“He should be back before the end of the season, so that’s not the thought.”
Meanwhile, Jay Matete should remain with the Mariners, despite parent club Fleetwood having appointed Simon Grayson as the new manager.
Some Town fans began to grow concerned that the midfielder could be recalled by the Trawlermen, with Grayson having brought Harrison Biggins back from his spell at Barrow.
Matete has impressed in his two appearances for Town so far, having been the standout player in defeats against Scunthorpe United and Stevenage.
EFL rules though would appear to rule out any possible recall for the 19-year-old.
