According to the seven-time Grand Slam champion, Djokovic has given a “strong message” to his top-tier competitors, including Jannik Siner and Carlos Alcaraz.
Ahead of the 2025 Australian Open, Djokovic stunned the tennis community with the thrilling announcement that Murray will be joining his squad in a social media video.
The 37-year-old Serb stated, “I’m thrilled to have one of my fiercest opponents on the same side of the net as my coach.”
“I’m excited for the season to begin and to compete in Australia with Andy, with whom I’ve experienced many memorable times here.
Since we were young boys, we have played together, and throughout the past 25 years, we have challenged one another. In our sport, we’ve seen some of the most spectacular fights. “I thought our story might be over,” they said, referring to us as game changers, risk-takers, and history makers. As it happens, there is one last chapter. It’s time for one of my most formidable rivals to support me. Greetings, Coach Andy Murray.
Murray added, “I’ll be joining Novak’s team in the off-season, helping him prepare for the Australian Open,” in reference to the collaboration.
“I’m thrilled about it and am looking forward to helping Novak reach his goals while spending time on the same side of the net for a change.
“Djokovic’s move shows that he still has the desire to add 24 to his record 24 Grand Slams,” Wilander said in an interview with Eurosport.
“My first reaction was that Novak Djokovic wants to win more Grand Slams,” remarked the Swedish player.
It goes without saying that all of us tennis fans would adore it if he were to win 25 Grand Slams and be regarded as the best of all time.
“I’d say he believes he can still win Grand Slams in 2025, or even 2026, with Andy Murray’s assistance.
“I believe Novak is conveying that he still believes he has some of his best tennis left in him or that his best game is still to come.
It’s a powerful [message] to the world’s top players, including Carlos Alcaraz and Yannick Sinéad.
The tennis great also discussed his belief that Murray can assist Djokovic.
“What Andy can do is he can tell Novak things that Novak might already know, but he has seen and practiced with all of these players that Novak will encounter,” Wilander added.
He has had conversations with Daniel Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Yannick Sinéad, and Carlos Alcaraz.
He won’t be secretive, but he will think differently about these people’ games. I believe Andy Murray will be aware of many minor subtleties that Novak might overlook.
“I believe the overall image will be very comparable. Andy has won the Davis Cup, two Olympic gold medals, and three Grand Slam championships. In the grand scheme of things, they both have the same idea.
How is a Grand Slam prepared for? How significant are the ATP Tour competitions? Then, depending on whether it’s the first round, how do you play five-set matches? Is the quarterfinals upon us? Is Novak worn out from the last game? Are we using fast points? Do we have lengthy points? After five hours, how strong is my opponent?
Novak Djokovic will be aware of many things, but perhaps he isn’t considering them throughout the match.
