This summer, the Boston Red Sox have already acquired a crucial starting pitcher. Sonny Gray was a fantastic addition to the team, but he is only a temporary solution for the rotation.

Since the trade deadline, there have been whispers regarding young, cost-controlled trade targets, such as Minnesota Twins player Joe Ryan. Boston has a mutual option for the 2027 season after Gray, who is 36 years old, has one season of complete control.

The deal with the St. Louis Cardinals was a wise decision, but perhaps more work has to be done. The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier reported that the two parties have not yet discussed a contract extension, which further supports this theory.
