The Los Angeles Clippers now have the oldest roster in the league and possibly among the oldest in league history after adding Chris Paul this offseason. Even though a number of people have expressed their worries about this issue, Paul is nevertheless upbeat about the forthcoming season. Paul answered issues about the team’s age and how it would be a barrier to their title challenge during an appearance on Lou Williams’ podcast, “The Underground Lounge.” In response, the seasoned guard said:
The Clippers, as constructed, boast one of the deepest rosters in the league. With the additions of key players like Bradley Beal, Chris Paul, and Brook Lopez in the summer, Los Angeles made some significant upgrades while subsequently gaining veteran experience. While this could be viewed positively, the team’s average age is worth noting. At 40, Chris Paul is also the oldest player on the team. Although his age would be a concern, the guard has shown that he is capable of being a contributor. On this note, he makes a good point regarding the role of experience and the impact it will have during the regular season. While the veteran experience isn’t a necessity to win titles, as proven by the Oklahoma City Thunder last season, it certainly does help along the way. With players such as Kawhi Leonard and Brook Lopez, who have experience in winning championships, along with veterans like Chris Paul and James Harden, who have dominated during the regular season and experienced the playoffs for the better part of their careers, the Clippers have all the tools to navigate the upcoming season. But can they contend for the title? Possibly. There are too many variables that could sway the Clippers’ performance in the upcoming season. When considering the team’s roster, on paper, they boast the potential to be a contender, even in a rather loaded Western Conference. With a formidable star duo featuring Kawhi Leonard and James Harden, Los Angeles is expected to be competitive, given that their stars and key role players remain healthy over the course of the season. However, concerns do arise, not only from the aforementioned problems of age, but also due to the ongoing investigation regarding the controversial contract dealings involving the franchise and Leonard. With the likelihood that the Clippers will face a penalty, depending on the severity, the team could see its chances of contending take a hit.
