Horst Steffen, the head coach of Werder Bremen, has stated that Bayern Munich’s 4-0 Bundesliga victory on Friday night was aided by dubious officiating. The manager cited two significant incidents, a controversial corner that resulted in Jonathan Tah’s first goal and Harry Kane’s penalty, and said Bayern was handed “fortunate” rulings at pivotal points in the match.
Bayern Munich’s win over Werder Bremen not without controversy
Werder Bremen lost to Bayern Munich 4-0, but not without controversy. After Michael Olise seemed to foul Felix Agu during the buildup, Tah scored from an incorrectly awarded corner to give the home team the lead in the twenty-first minute. Later, Kane’s penalty kick for Bayern’s second goal added to Steffen’s team’s frustration, as they believed both calls unjustly changed the tide of the match.
Werder Bremen boss unhappy with the refereeing
After the game, Steffen expressed his discontent, claiming that luck and refereeing had not gone in his favor. “You need a little bit of luck on all fronts if you want to bring anything home from Munich. Additionally, there were referee calls prior to the first two goals that, in my view, weren’t totally fortunate,” he stated. “Harry is obviously playing it cleverly,” Steffen continued in reference to the penalty incident. However, I believe that the penalty shouldn’t be applied.
Werder Bremen captain doubles down on Olise’s fou
Olise’s push was deemed a “definite foul” by Werder Bremen captain Marco Friedl, who echoed his coach’s wrath. The defender acknowledged that Bayern was in control the entire time, but he still said the outcome was fair. Despite the criticism, Steffen and Friedl agreed that minor mistakes were insufficient to account for the crushing loss at the Allianz Arena. However, the German publication Sport implied that Bayern was being given “preferential treatment.”
