After losing to the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, the Boston Red Sox are in a precarious position in the playoff standings going into a series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Though the three teams have a significant lead over the Texas Rangers on the outside looking in, the squad is only just ahead of the Houston Astros and Cleveland Guardians in the wild card standings. Although the Red Sox’s October schedule is still up in the air, the team utilized Monday’s off day to make a significant move with franchise ace Garrett Crochet in an attempt to prepare itself for whatever postseason spot they may end up in.
Before their first possible postseason clash, the Red Sox used an off day to give Crochet five days of rest in preparation for a series against the divisional rival Toronto Blue Jays. “The Red Sox’ postseason fate remains uncertain, but there’s no question about who the team will ask to take the ball in Game 1 of a potential wild-car series: Garrett Crochet,” Alex Speier wrote for The Boston Globe. “The Sox switched Brayan Bello and Crochet about in their rotation for the upcoming series in Toronto. Crochet will pitch on four days of rest Wednesday, while Bello will be pushed back one day to receive six days of rest before starting on Thursday.
