The Boston Bruins’ first session under new head coach Marco Sturm took place on Thursday, marking the start of training camp. Defenseman Charlie McAvoy seemed rather pleased with the job the Bruins accomplished, even though it was only one day of work. It is undeniable that the 2024–25 season was a letdown for the Boston Bruins. Boston missed the playoffs completely last season after reaching the Eastern Conference quarterfinals in 2024.

Consequently, significant adjustments were undertaken this summer. The front office was active with free agency, especially when it came to addressing the team’s depth, and Sturm was appointed as the team’s new head coach. It is hoped that the Bruins can play at a high level for the entire 82-game season now that they have more reliable players in town. Getting in some quality work at training camp is the first step in that process. Sturm will need to make an immediate impact with his new squad as the regular season begins in less than a month. “It sounds like he did a great job of setting the tone on Thursday,” McAvoy said.

Speaking to reporters, McAvoy stated, “I thought today was a great day.” “I know you don’t want to make a big deal out of guys right away. Assuming he will continue to throw more at us, we will compete more over these first few days when everyone has a solid base. Let’s get our legs under us and be as sharp as we can be. McAvoy is aware that a single practice day can only accomplish so much, but with Sturm implementing a new regime, every day leading up to the season will be crucial, and it appears the team’s new head coach is aware of that.

Before the regular season begins, the Bruins have a lot of work to do, and once the preseason begins, things will change drastically. The Boston Bruins will play the Washington Capitals in their first preseason match.
