The College Football Playoff’s new 12-team format is not without controversy. Even Ryan Day, head coach of the newly crowned Ohio State champions, has a thing or two to say about the revamped system that might not sit well with NCAA brass.

As recently as mid-January, the Buckeyes were crowned the first champions under the new format. The team had to survive the longest postseason in NCAA history, in a format that more closely resembles the NFL’s than any college football system ever used.

The new system drew criticism from teams, media, and fans, but no one has doubted Day and Ohio State’s merit in achieving the historic championship. Despite this, the head coach warned the NCAA that it needs to take a hard look at the CFP for the sake of student-athletes.

Day insisted that the schedule must take into account transfers and newly arrived recruits“Now, our young guys need work, but some of the older guys who have played a lot of football… we need to treat them a little bit differently.”

For now, Day and the Buckeyes are taking a well-deserved break. The start of the next schedule will bring new challenges, and Ohio State will have to show that it learned from its experience last season from the very beginning of the new tournament, where it will face Arch Manning and his Texas Longhorns.
