Danny McGuire reveals why he took Castleford Tigers job as he gives initial verdict

Danny McGuire has revealed his motivations behind taking the Castleford Tigers jobs as he reflected upon week one of pre-season.

McGuire joined the coaching staff at Wheldon Road in late 2023 as he departed Hull KR amidst their play-off run but just over a year on, the former Leeds Rhinos man was ascending to become head coach of Castleford Tigers following Craig Lingard’s sacking.

Lingard’s sacking was a surprising one but it came days after investor Martin Jepson took his control of the club close to 100%, highlighting what a cutthroat businessman he is. It was a move that signified change was coming but in the end, little change happened with McGuire simply moving from assistant to head coach.

That reflected just how highly regarded McGuire is thought of as he ventures into the coaching sphere and now, after tasting the first few days of leading a pre-season McGuire has spoken on the job.

Speaking in a video posted to Castleford Tigers’ X page, McGuire explained:  “I’ve got to admit that I am enjoying being able to make decisions and I’m enjoying leading. I felt like as a player, that was my role anyway, so I’m fairly comfortable in telling people where they need to be and what they need to do.”

He would also pile the praise on his players and staff with almost all of the squad back in training, barring some of the overseas players that have either been representing Papua New Guinea or have been recently signed such as Daejarn Asi.
