When York City approached in early October, Leeds United allowed promising player Luca Thomas to leave on loan.
The attacker was given permission by Leeds United to join the National League team in order to gain some experience. In order to further his growth, he temporarily moved to York Community Stadium.
As York City looks to be promoted to the Football League, 20-year-old Thomas has helped them climb to the top of the fifth division table. They have only lost once in the league thus far, and they have 38 points from their first 17 games.
Forest Green Rovers, who were demoted from League Two, behind the Minstermen by one point in the last campaign, and also have the likes of Barnet, Gateshead, Oldham Athletic and Rochdale chasing them down as they look to continue their form over the coming weeks.
How is Luca Thomas doing now that he is not playing for Leeds United?
So far, Thomas’ transfer from Leeds United to York City has gone smoothly.
He has contributed one goal to the Minstermen’s five appearances in all competitions, four of which have been in the league.
The prospect will benefit from having a lot of minutes as he gets ready to return to Elland Road.
Thomas progressed through Manchester City’s system and played for the Premier League powerhouses on a regular basis at several different young levels.
In 2021, he moved to Leeds United and made his debut for their Under-18 team.
More recently, the Crewe native has made appearances for their Under-21 team, where he has scored 12 goals in 30 games.
Thomas has not yet made an appearance for the Whites’ first team, but he hopes that his first loan away at York City will increase his prospects of playing for Daniel Farke’s club in the future.
He will be excited to carry on with his work under Adam Hinshelwood’s tutelage in the interim.
The predicament with Leeds United
When Thomas returns from his loan at York City this winter, Leeds United will need to make a decision.
In 2022, he signed his first professional contract, which was renewed this past summer.
Now that his contract is set to expire in 2025, the Whites will have to decide whether to extend his employment.
