Premier League news live updates: Injury latest ahead of this weekend’s fixtures; WSL transfer deadline day

Callum Wilson has signed a one-year contract extension at Newcastle United to keep him at the club until 2025.

The 31-year-old striker, who joined from Bournemouth in 2020, has scored 40 goals in 79 appearances for the club, including 18 goals last season as Newcastle qualified for the Champions League.

Wilson said: “When I first joined the club, I had ambitions to come back to the Premier League having been relegated with Bournemouth and over the first few interviews I mentioned Europe and I mentioned getting to 100 Premier League goals.

“They were ambitions of mine and they still are. I’m close to get into the ‘100 Club’ and also becoming the second all- time Premier League scorer for Newcastle would be an amazing achievement, having looked up to (Alan) Shearer for many years.”

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has confirmed that Sandro Tonali has picked up a “slight thigh injury” while on international duty with Italy.

He missed a return to the San Siro on Tuesday, where Italy beat Ukraine 2-1.

“He felt his thigh in training so he’s come back in and had a scan,” Howe said. “There’s a slight injury there. It’s nothing too serious or too long but we’ll wait and see if he’s fit for this weekend.”

Newcastle’s other major question was over centre-back Sven Botman, who was unfit for the 3-1 loss to Brighton after going off in the final minutes against Liverpool. Howe would not be drawn on his availability.

“Possibly,” he replied. “He’s trained this week. Fingers crossed for Sven, we’ll see how he feels (in training) today.”

Elliot Anderson pulled out of his first senior Scotland squad with injury, with Gareth Southgate stating England retain an interest in the player. Though Howe said it was not his place to comment on where Anderson’s head was at, he played down the injury.

“Fingers crossed, yes,” he replied to the question of whether Anderson would be available for Brentford on Saturday.
