After serving almost four months in prison, Steve Bannon, one of the leaders of Donald Trump’s far-right organization, was released on Tuesday, adding another wild card to the US election that is only a week away.
Bannon quickly rushed to the airways to support Trump, disparage his opponents, and spread electoral conspiracy claims after leaving a federal prison in Connecticut where he was doing time for a contempt of Congress conviction.
As you can see, I’m not at all broken today. During a conference, Bannon acknowledged that he had previously spoken with Trump after his release, saying, “My four months at Danbury Federal Prison have empowered me.”
Convicted of refusing to appear before the congressional panel looking into the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol by Trump’s supporters, Bannon referred to himself as a political prisoner.
Bannon claimed that young African American and Hispanic inmates at Danbury viewed Vice President Kamala Harris as the “queen” of mass imprisonment, adding, “I was able to listen, to observe, and to learn from working-class minorities” in prison.
He boldly declared that he was “proud” to spend time “if it’s what it takes to stand up to (President) Joe Biden” as he was admitted to prison on July 1.
Bannon, on022 but was able to stay out of jail while contesting his conviction.e of the driving forces behind Trump’s victorious 2016 campaign, was given a four-month prison sentence in October 2
At a court hearing, Trump appointee District Judge Carl Nichols revoked Bannon’s bail and ordered him to surrender to prison after a federal appeals court affirmed the conviction in May.
Since then, a lot has changed in US politics, with Harris emerging as the Democratic contender and Biden withdrawing from the campaign.
Late in the 2016 campaign, Bannon assumed a high-level position and eventually worked as Trump’s chief strategist in the White House. He left after seven months, allegedly because of disagreements with other senior staff members.
Even though he is no longer employed by the former president, he has persisted in using his connections to help him regain the White House, primarily through his podcast, The War Room.
