Las Vegas Raiders now have to make a very important decision that could change their future

The Las Vegas Raiders may do what they probably shouldn’t. But, then again, is that really a surprise? That’s pretty much what they have always done — once you think they will do something that makes complete and logical sense, they do the opposite, and it never makes any sense or helps.

The Raiders are currently grappling with significant quarterback issues that have plagued their season performance. Initially, the team opted for Gardner Minshew over Aidan O’Connell to start the season, a decision that has been scrutinized due to Minshew’s performance which hasn’t lived up to expectations.

Minshew has struggled with turnovers, greatly, including a recent game against the Los Angeles Rams where he was responsible for multiple interceptions and a fumble. He tallied four total turnovers that game, the most of his career.

Aidan O’Connell, who briefly took over due to Minshew playing so badly, also couldn’t stabilize the position, suffering a thumb injury that forced him out, thereby returning the starting role to Minshew. He wasn’t looking like an answer for the problem, or anything crazy, but he was playing better than Minshew.

The situation has led to discussions about potentially exploring other quarterback options, and they did — Desmond Ridder, the former Atlanta Falcons starter and Arizona Cardinals practice squad quarterback. The Raiders’ quarterback carousel continues to be a focal point of their struggles. But, since letting Derek Carr walk, that’s all the talk of the town has been about.

Now, after a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, you have to assume that head coach Antonio Pierce and company feel like they still have a shot to be a good team. You have to think that they feel like they can still win ball games, even though it would be in their best interest to lose as many as possible, at this point.

The Raiders now have a tough decision to make. Minshew did not play well at all against the Chiefs, as the offense as a whole struggled. He looks to have completely lost his confidence. So, do the Raiders go to Desmond Ridder now?

If they want to keep losing and increase their odds as a high pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, they should keep playing Minshew. If they want a chance to win, while also seeing what Ridder has, play him.

It’s a decision that could impact the future of the franchise greatly. They will have to make that decision this week before they play the Cincinnati Bengals.
