Washington — In support of a more cohesive and inclusive nation, Bruce Springsteen endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president on Thursday. He also referred to former President Donald Trump as “the most dangerous candidate for president in my lifetime.”
“This magnificent nation has never felt more politically, spiritually, and emotionally divided as it does right now, possibly since the Civil War. In a brief video posted to social media, the rock musician stated, “It doesn’t have to be this way.”
According to him, Harris and her campaign mate, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, “are committed to a vision of this country that respects and includes everyone, regardless of class, religion, race, your political point of view, or sexual identity.”
He said that Harris’ plans will boost the economy for all, not just the rich.
“That’s the vision of America I’ve been consistently writing about for 55 years,” Springsteen stated.
Trump, he said, “does not understand the meaning of this country, its history or what it means to be deeply American.” He was severe in his criticism of the Republican nominee.
“His disdain for the sanctity of our Constitution, the sanctity of democracy, the sanctity of the rule of law and the sanctity of the peaceful transfer of power should disqualify him from the office of president ever again,” he stated.
Springsteen’s endorsement came as no surprise. He has long been skeptical of Trump and has supported Democratic presidential candidates for years.
In a Rolling Stone interview from 2016, Springsteen referred to Trump as a “moron.” Springsteen told The Atlantic during Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign that he wasn’t sure “if our democracy could stand another four years of his custodianship.”
Furthermore, it’s unknown how big celebrity endorsements will affect the campaign. In the 24 hours following her endorsement of Harris, Taylor Swift prompted over 400,000 visits to vote.gov, a website that provides information on how to register to vote.
Trump supporters are among the many other musicians that have voiced their opinions during this campaign.
According to Springsteen, his “opinion is no more or less important than those of any of my fellow citizens.”
“Like you, I’ve only got one vote and it’s one of the most precious possessions that I have,” remarked the man.
