Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian benched starting quarterback Quinn Ewers for a brief period of time during the Texas football team’s first loss of the season against Georgia last week. Sarkisian claimed that Ewers handled the hardship he encountered a week ago effectively, despite the fact that much was stated about what they could or might not signify. With a 27–24 road victory over Vanderbilt, which unusually started the season ranked in the top 25 and winners of its last three, including a stunning upset of Alabama three weeks ago, Ewers put the Longhorns back in the win column on Saturday. After the victory, Sarkisian commended his starting quarterback, despite the fact that the Texas quarterback did not play at his best, especially in the early going.

We’ll be alright if he continues to play that way throughout the season. With Ewers throwing for 288 yards and three touchdowns and recording two interceptions, all after being tipped, Sarkisian declared, “We’re going to be just fine.”

“There is no worse situation than what happened to [Ewers] last week, particularly in that first half, and then his ability to recover and show the resolve that he displayed,” he remarked afterwards. “I always say that a man’s true character is shown in his ability to overcome adversity, and after last week’s game, he and our team faced a lot of adversity.”

The tough Georgia defense last Saturday held the quarterback to just 17 yards via the air and caused two turnovers in the first half, stifling Ewers and the Texas offense. Sarkisian took the risky decision to switch quarterbacks and start backup Arch Manning, who started the two games Ewers lost due to injury, in an attempt to get something going on the offensive end of the ball.

Even though the move was temporary—Masoning also had difficulties before Ewers took his place—it raised some questions about whether Ewers would remain with the Texas football program, particularly in light of an Instagram post by 247Sports that later claimed it had been hacked and stated that Ewers would miss the rest of the season in order to get ready for the NFL Draft.
Since it looks like he will continue to start for the Longhorns as they go deeper into their first SEC schedule, Ewers called the situation “weird.”

Texas will take a week off following their victory over Vanderbilt before playing Florida on November 9. The Longhorns then play at Arkansas, host Kentucky at home, and end the regular season at a rival school.
