Bruce Dickinson names ‘Tears of the Dragon’ as the greatest song he’s ever written

He explains why he rates it so highly

Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson has named his 1994 track ‘Tears of the Dragon’ as the greatest song he’s ever written.

Speaking to Revolver Magazine to promote his recently unleashed solo album ‘The Mandrake Project’, Bruce Dickinson was asked what he believes is the best track he has ever penned either as a solo artist or with Iron Maiden.

Singling out ‘Tears of the Dragon’, the closing track and lead single on his second solo record ‘Balls to Picasso’, Bruce explained that it’s a highly affecting track.

“I would say ‘Tears of the Dragon’ ’cause I don’t know what it means,” Bruce said. “But it means something. That song really affects people. It affects me.

“I do know what it’s about: It’s about abandonment, not being abandoned, but abandoning yourself to the universe, to whatever is gonna come next. But I still don’t know why it is ‘the tears of the dragon.’

“I’ve never figured that out. It works and it means something, but I don’t know what it is. And that’s why it’s great.”

Among the dozens of Iron Maiden songs that Bruce Dickinson has written or co-written are ‘2 Minutes to Midnight,’ ‘Empire of the Clouds,’ ‘Can I Play with Madness,’ ‘Flight of Icarus,’ and ‘Powerslave.’

Speaking to Planet Rock’s Paul Anthony earlier this month, Bruce Dickinson confirmed that ‘Tears of the Dragon’ will definitely make the setlist at his upcoming 2024 tour dates.

Reflecting on his setlist plans, Bruce said: “There’ll be a lot of stuff. There’ll be stuff off ‘Chemical Wedding,’ obviously. You’ve got to play ‘Tears of the Dragon’ and so on and so forth. There’ll be stuff off ‘Accident of Birth.’

“So it’s going to be a smorgasbord of the best of because it’s been 19/20 years since I’ve toured (solo) live. So lots of people have either never seen me live, or the ones that have seen me live have forgotten how bad it was, and they bought tickets! (laughs).”

Most of the dates on Bruce Dickinson’s May 2024 UK tour are sold out, however you can still get tickets for Wolverhampton and Swansea from Planet Rock Tickets now.
