There was a lot of noise at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium during the Longhorns’ 30–15 loss to the Bulldogs on Saturday due to a defensive pass interference call on Texas senior Jahdae Barron after he intercepted a pass from Georgia quarterback Carson Beck.
The DPI call infuriated Texas fans, who started hurling trash onto the field, including bottles and cans. The officials were able to review and rescind the punishment since the game was interrupted to clean up the mess.
Texas was ultimately penalized $250,000 by the SEC for dumping debris on the field. Greg Sankey, the SEC commissioner, also stipulated that the school must identify and suspend pupils who participated in debris flinging as part of the sentence. Additionally, Texas needs to review its alcohol policies and submit any findings to the SEC.
Following the announcement of this consequence, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian advised supporters to exercise “better discretion” going forward. He didn’t want the event to give Texas fans a particular impression, but he did understand their intensity at that particular moment.
“I believe that Saturday night demonstrated our fervent fan base,” Sarkisian stated. “I believe that at the time, we were all a little unhappy. In situations like those, I simply believe that everyone needs to exercise a bit more restraint. We do not wish for it to be the storyline that DKR is about. The football game was too terrific for that to be the main attraction. I believe they got the penalty reversal right in the end.
Texas will host the Florida Gators on Saturday, November 9th, the Longhorns’ next home game. After the incident this past weekend, Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium is probably going to have a different vibe.
