‘I have played for and captained the team I love’ – Ross Molony confirms Leinster departure as he signs for Bath
Ross Molony’s departure from Leinster at the end of the season has been confirmed.
The second-row will join Bath on a three-year deal this summer, linking up with former Munster coach Johann van Graan at the Premiership club.
Molony (29) is a popular figure at Leinster, where he has played 177 times since making his debut in February, 2015.
A consistent performer who marries high skill-levels and a knack for the lineout, he has opted to depart after finding his opportunities limited this season with the emergence of Joe McCarthy.
Bath coach van Graan, who is successfully restoring the English giants to being a competitive force, hailed the arrival of the experienced Dubliner.
“Ross is a true professional and his journey in rugby is a testament to this,” the South African said.
“His work ethic and leadership are some of his key characteristics and I believe he will play a huge part in our journey in the next number of years. What struck me is the quality of a human being Ross is.”
Molony wrote an emotional statement of his own on Leinster’s website.
“It’s hard to write these words and to finally confirm my move to Bath Rugby for next season, but here we go!” he wrote.
“Growing up in Dublin, down the road from the RDS, pulling on a Leinster jersey is all that I ever dreamed about.
“That dream started and was nurtured in Lansdowne FC with the minis and with my dad, Kevin, coaching me, and then into St Michael’s College where I had a brilliant six years and then with UCD in the AIL.
“All along I have had people who have given their time to me and to my development. There are too many to mention but I couldn’t have pulled on that Leinster jersey for the first time against Zebre nearly ten years ago, and every time since then, without that support.
“I will miss the people who make up this incredible club.
“The players, the coaches, backroom staff, S&C staff and physios, thank you for the support and the opportunities you have given me.
“Thank you to the supporters who make playing for this club so special. From the great times in the RDS and Aviva to the tough wins on the road; your voices are always heard.
“I have played for and captained the team I love. I have won trophies and shared priceless memories with great people, with my family and best friends beside me and I will leave with nothing but fondness for a great club.
“The journey isn’t over though! I am excited by the next chapter and to be joining Johann and the team in Bath.
“Bath are a team that play a great brand of rugby, with world-class players and coaches. I am lucky to have played them a few times in my career and at their iconic ground. I played there only a few weeks ago at The Rec and it is one of the best stadiums in world rugby in my opinion. I can’t wait to get started and begin the new challenge.
“However, until then, there is a lot of rugby to play this season and the goal goes without saying.
“I will do everything I possibly can to finish my time in Leinster as I started. Giving my all for the club I love.”
