Despite Jerry Jones’ insistence that he is content with the Dallas Cowboys squad as it stands, there are glaring gaps that must be filled.
All season long, there has been talk about the team’s lack of running.
Dallas has the worst running back room in the NFL since they didn’t choose a running back in the draft or sign a top free agent like Derrick Henry, who leads the league in rushing.
There should be a running back available at the trade deadline at a reasonable price if Jerry and company don’t want to wait until the next season to make a deal.
In his list of possible trade prospects, ESPN.com’s Bill Burnwell mentioned Herbert as a Cowboys alternative.
The Cowboys should definitely ask about his predicted trade offer, as it would only cost them a sixth-round selection pick.
“Derrick Henry isn’t there to make an instant effect, but how about bringing in another pair of new legs to rival Dowdle? Although Herbert isn’t likely the type of back to handle 20 carries per game, Burnwell pointed out that his 4.9 yards per carry average ranks sixth out of 46 players who had 300 carries or more between 2021 and 2023.
“In Chicago’s rushing assault, Herbert has been the odd man out since offensive coordinator Shane Waldron seems to favor Roschon Johnson and D’Andre Swift. Herbert hasn’t touched the ball since Week 3 and has only participated in 27 offensive snaps in six games. He will probably be moving on in 2025 because his contract expires at the end of the season. General manager Ryan Poles is shown here.
It is clear that the Cowboys need backfield assistance, and even while a move for Herbert might not cause much controversy, it is still worth the chance.
What are you waiting for, Jerry? Herbert has been effective when given the chance, recording 1,775 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns in his first three seasons in the league.
