Wayne Rooney on Dan Scarr leaving Plymouth Argyle for Wrexham
The defender made 109 appearances for the Pilgrims and was part of their outstanding 2022/23 League One title-winning squad
Wayne Rooney believes it made sense for Plymouth Argyle and defender Dan Scarr that he completed a move to ambitious League One outfit Wrexham.
Scarr joined newly-promoted Wrexham on Friday on a three-year contract, with Argyle receiving an undisclosed fee for the 29-year-old, who would have been a free agent at the end of the forthcoming 2024/25 campaign unless he had signed a new deal.
As Scarr’s transfer was only finalised on Friday he did not take part in Wrexham’s final pre-season game, a 1-0 home win against Fleetwood Town the following afternoon. They will begin their League One campaign by hosting Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.
Rooney said: “I think it was a good opportunity for Dan and for his family as well. We had a good chat about it. He has been a really good servant to the club but the time was right for him and maybe for the club as well. Now it’s an opportunity for us to bring someone else in.”
That someone else seems set to be former Hungary under-21 international Kornel Szucs, with Rooney confirming to Plymouth Live after Argyle’s 1-0 pre-season win at MK Dons on Saturday that the club were close to signing the defender.
Scarr posted a heartfelt message on Instagram to Argyle’s Green Army after his move to Wrexham was announced. He said: “I genuinely don’t even know here to start. This club has become a part of my family. I’ve had some of the best memories on and off the pitch at this club, met some amazing people and friends for life.
“It has been the best three years I’ve had in football and I can’t thank you all enough for making me a better person. To the Green Army, you’ve been unbelievable with me from the second I walked through the door and even backed me through the tough times! You are truly one of a kind.
“I wish the whole club nothing but the best of luck in the future and I know you’ll smash it. Thank you Janners. Once a green always a green.”
