After overcoming Karolina Muchova 6-1 6-3 in the championship match, Coco Gauff has emerged victorious at the China Open this year. Gauff, who is 20 years old, has won the China Open at the youngest age in the previous 14 years. In addition, she is the second American champion in the history of the China Open, after Serena Williams in 2004 and 2013.
Following her victory, Gauff said, “I want to say congratulations to you, Karolina; it’s great to see you back on tour.” Gauff was alluding to Muchova’s protracted absence from competition following a wrist injury sustained at the 2023 US Open. “I’m grateful to my team. It’s our first competition as a full, cohesive team.
Gauff’s first competition following the addition of Matt Daly to her coaching staff was the China Open. She split ways with Brad Gilbert in September. Gauff is increasing her chances of making it to the WTA Finals by winning the China Open. In order to get into the season-ending competition, she must be among the top eight players according to the WTA Rankings.
