When Coco Gauff confirmed that Matt Daly would be her new coach, she expressed her excitement as “really excited.”
Gauff and Brad Gilbert parted ways lately following a 14-month relationship during which she won the US Open in 2023. However, this summer saw a significant decline in her play. Now, the American celebrity has disclosed that she is collaborating with Daly, who has teamed up with J.C. Farrell to assist in coaching the 20-year-old for the remainder of the season and into 2025.Daly, 45, a former standout in college, most recently served as Denis Shapovalov’s ATP Tour coach.
In an interview with WTA Insider, Gauff stated, “I’m really excited.”
“I believe that it will most likely appear like this again the following year. I can’t wait for this new development, which should help me elevate other aspects of my play.
“It was a pleasure working with Brad, and it was clear that we were a fantastic team. I believe it was just time for me to make some changes to my game and a reset in order to improve on last year’s campaign.
When Gauff lost to fellow countrywoman Emma Navarro in the fourth round of the US Open earlier in September, she committed 19 double faults. As a result, she dropped out of the top five of the WTA Rankings.
For the first time since then, she is competing in the China Open in Beijing. She is ranked fourth in the single draw and has stated that she has made improving her serve a top focus.
“I want to work on other aspects of my game as well, but right now, the serve is the main focus,” she continued. I play fairly well when I serve well. That, in my opinion, is the core of my game.
“So far, the small amount of work we’ve done has significantly improved.
There isn’t a drastic amount at this time, like changing the entire technique or restarting everything. It’s just little things that will benefit me after a week of practice.
Gauff, who was given a first-round bye at the WTA 100, will play French tennis player Clara Burel in her China Open debut on Friday.
A year prior, she advanced to the semifinals of the competition, when she was defeated by eventual winner Iga Swiatek.
