The blunder occurred when Wrexham’s squad bus left Birmingham without a crucial player following a “Hollywood derby” loss in which Tom Brady took home the bragging rights
Star-studded attendance graced the highly anticipated encounter, which featured Brady, a Birmingham investor, alongside co-owners of Wrexham, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. David Beckham, who co-owns Inter Miami, traveled across the Atlantic to see the electrifying atmosphere at Birmingham City’s St Andrew’s stadium.
With just three minutes played, Jack Marriott gave the Red Dragons the lead. However, the hosts stormed back, with club record signing Jay Stansfield scoring twice to put his team ahead. Phil Parkinson’s team was devastated when Japan international Tomoki Iwata scored a third goal to clinch the victory just before the hour mark.
After the final whistle, feelings were running high as the team lost a prestigious match, which was a tough pill to swallow. George Dobson, who had been delayed because of a standard post-match drug test, was inadvertently left behind in the West Midlands as the squad bus headed for North Wales, adding to the turmoil and despair that followed the defeat.
In an interview with The Fozcast Live podcast, James McClean responded to a question on the incident by saying, “It’s true! After the game, he was taking the drug test. We kind of abandoned him because our minds were all over the place.”
After the setback, Wrexham has been winning again, as they defeated Crawley Town the previous weekend to maintain their lead in the League One standings. They’ll play their homecoming match against Leyton Orient on Saturday.
