He was fired from the North Queensland Cowboys as assistant coach.

James Maloney, the assistant coach of the North Queensland Cowboys, was fired and fined $300 for driving under the influence in Townsville.

According to police prosecutor Brandon Wood, Maloney admitted to officers that he had drunk alcohol just before being apprehended.

When the 38-year-old was stopped for a random breathalyzer test in Railway Estate on August 30, he gave a blood alcohol result of 0.08.

After being charged, Maloney, who signed a two-year contract to become a coach with the Cowboys in November of last year, was quickly let go by the team.

On the eve of the NRL finals, the Cowboys called the exit “amicable”.

The two-time NRL premiership winner made an early guilty plea during his Tuesday appearance in Townsville Magistrates Court.
