Plymouth Argyle hit by suspension blow for clash with League One leaders
Brendan Galloway will miss the visit of Ipswich Town next Sunday after being sent-off late in the 2-2 draw at Portsmouth
Steven Schumacher will be without two more players for Plymouth Argyle’s Sky-televised third-versus-first League One clash against Ipswich Town at Home Park next Sunday lunchtime.
Already without the long-term injured trio of James Bolton, Conor Grant and Mickel Miller, the Pilgrims will have to take on table-topping Ipswich minus midfielder Finn Azaz and defender Brendan Galloway.
Azaz has received a first call-up to the Republic of Ireland under-21s squad to play in their two-legged UEFA European Championship play-off against Israel.
Galloway, meanwhile, was sent-off for a second bookable offence deep into stoppage time as 10-man Argyle conceded a last-gasp goal to draw 2-2 away to Portsmouth at Fratton Park.
The Zimbabwe international had been sent on as a 70th minute substitute for Macaulay Gillesphey and picked up his first yellow card for time-wasting as the Pilgrims led late on.
Galloway will be banned for the visit of Ipswich after he was dismissed by referee James Bell in the fourth minute of added-on time.
It followed some pushing and shoving between Galloway and Portsmouth’s Michael Morrison as Argyle prepared to defend a long throw-in from Marlon Pack.
No sooner had Galloway left the pitch than a cross from Joe Morrell was headed home by Reeco Hackett to maintain Portsmouth’s unbeaten start to the league campaign and put paid to Argyle’s hopes of a fifth consecutive victory.
Schumacher said: “It’s naive from Brendan but their player pushes him first, Brendan pushes him back and their player made a meal of it and fell over.
“Brendan should have done the same when he was pushed first but he never, and we got punished for it.”
Schumacher added: “I thought he (Bell) had given a straight red card so I was going to ask the referee to rescind it, but apparently it wasn’t, it was a yellow and then a red.
“If it’s a yellow card for pushing in the chest then obviously he shouldn’t do that, but I hope he booked Morrison as well because he did exactly the same. Just because he threw himself on the floor it’s our one that gets punished.
“We need to be a bit brighter than that. In that type of situation we need to have calm heads and not get involved where you can. and see the game out.”
Galloway had been booked in the 89th minute for taking too long at a throw-in close to one of the Portsmouth corner flags as Argyle tried to run down the clock.
Schumacher said: “They (Portsmouth) would have done exactly the same had they been winning 2-1. It’s just part and parcel of the game, it’s what happens.”
Argyle were without midfielder Danny Mayor against Portsmouth, which led to 17-year-old Will Jenkins-Davies being drafted into the squad as one of the substitutes.
Schumacher said: “Danny had a family issue that he had to get back up north for. Unfortunately, he wasn’t available to us. Hopefully he will be alright for next week, fingers crossed.”
Before then, Argyle will play their second Southern Group E game away to Swindon Town at the County Ground on Tuesday (7pm).
Schumacher is set to make a number of changes to his side, as he did in the previous tie in the competition when the Pilgrims drew 1-1 with Bristol Rovers at Home Park last month before picking up a bonus point by winning the penalty shoot-out 4-3.
