NRL Casualty Ward: Departing Cowboys suffer injury blow
Departing North Queensland centre Valentine Holmes faces a nervous wait after suffering a lower-leg injury in the dying stages of Friday night’s semi-final loss to the Sharks.
The veteran suffered the injury while running down the field with less than three minutes remaining on the clock, collapsing to the ground in agony. He appeared to suffer an initial knock after scoring a 70th minute try.
The injury came late in Holmes’ final game for the club, with the outside back to join the St George Illawarra Dragons next season. Holmes was helped from the field with what was reported as a possible broken leg.
North Queensland coach Todd Payten ruled out initial speculation that Holmes had suffered an Achilles injury.
“We are unsure at the moment, but he copped a knock when he scored the try,” Payten said. “He is on crutches.”
Fellow departing Cowboy Kyle Feldt also left the field early in the side’s loss to the Sharks, picking up a calf injury in the second half.
Feldt suffered the injury running onto a long pass from fullback Scott Drinkwater which was deemed forward, and the 2015 grand final hero immediately signalled that he could not play on.
It was a sad end to the Cowboys careers of two club stalwarts as they move on ahead of the 2025 season.
Dolphins fullback Trai Fuller has suffered a full rupture of his ACL and hopes to return to the field in the middle of 2025 after a reconstruction.
The Dolphins confirmed on Tuesday that the 27-year-old would see a surgeon next week and be booked in for surgery.
“Regrettably the scans showed the injury was exactly what it looked like when he did it,” said Dolphins head of performance Jeremy Hickmans.
“He will be operated on soon and that recovery will be extensive, but we will be aiming to have him back on the field midway through 2025.”
At the Roosters, veteran enforcer Jared Waerea-Hargreaves is back from suspension but back-rower Victor Radley is only an outside chance of playing against Manly after being named among the reserves.
Radley suffered a fractured scapula against the Raiders in Round 26 and seems more likely to be available for the preliminary final should the Roosters get there.
Meanwhile, centre Jesse Ramien is also listed in his side’s extended squad ahead of their clash with the Cowboys.
Ramien missed the loss to the Storm after failing to overcome the ankle injury he suffered against Manly in Round 27.
“Depends how he heals but he’d be a good chance I reckon,” Fitzgibbon told media post-match on Saturday.
Manly winger Jason Saab remains sidelined with an ankle injury suffered in Round 26 and will need his teammates to keep winning if he is to play again this season.
Panthers second-rower Scott Sorensen missed the win over the Roosters with a hamstring problem but the premiers are confident he will be back on deck for the preliminary final.
Another man battling a hamstring complaint is Storm expect livewire Sua Faalogo, who is rated a strong chance to be available for the preliminary final.
