Myles Farmer, suspended starting safety at Nebraska, joins Syracuse football as a transfer
Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse added an experienced defensive back to its rebuilding secondary over the weekend, welcoming University of Nebraska transfer Myles Farmer to the football team.
Farmer was Nebraska’s second-leading tackler last season but transferred from the Cornhusker program after he was suspended indefinitely at the start of the team’s preseason camp. Nebraska coach Matt Rhule did not specify why Farmer was suspended other than saying he failed to adhere to team standards.
The suspension was Farmer’s second as a member of the Nebraska football program. He entered the transfer portal soon after it was handed down.
Farmer had also been suspended for a game last season after being cited for suspicion of driving under the influence. Police stopped him after saying he failed to use a turn signal. They said he registered a .123 blood-alcohol content level.
Despite missing Nebraska’s game against the University of Michigan, Farmer recorded 73 tackles, broke up four passes and caught an interception. He played in 31 games during a four-year career Nebraska and is listed at 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds.
Farmer arrives at Syracuse as a redshirt junior. He redshirted his first season in 2019. He played five games in the 2020 season, which was shortened by the coronavirus pandemic. During that time he recorded 112 tackles, four interceptions and both forced and recovered a fumble.
He was ranked as a three-star recruit out of high school with offers from Louisville, Minnesota, Mississippi, Oregon, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.
He joins a Syracuse program where the defensive backfield has been one of the team’s traditional strengths and enters the coming season as one of its biggest question marks.
The Orange lost starting cornerbacks Garrett Williams (third round of NFL Draft) and Duce Chestnut (transfer to LSU), as well as starting safety Ja’Had Carter (transfer to Ohio State).
