Is Joseph Suaalii leaving the Sydney Roosters? Nick Politis shuts down reports over rugby-bound star
Joseph Suaalii’s move to rugby union could reportedly come sooner than expected, with reports surfacing that the teenage superstar could be released by the Sydney Roosters.
The 19-year-old signed a multi million-dollar deal to switch codes at the conclusion of his current Roosters contract, which expires at the end of 2024, ending mass speculation over his NRL future.
Suaalii will earn $1.6 million per season to play for the NSW Waratahs and Wallabies, but is set to remain in the 13-man code for the next two years before making the move.
But in a shock twist, reports from both Fox League and Channel Nine have indicated Suaalii could be moved on prior to the agreed date by the Tricolours.
Nick Politis has already moved to publicly shut down the rumours of an early exit – but in a lot of cases in the rugby league world, wherever there is smoke there is fire.
Suaalii has scored just one try in nine games this year since moving to the centres, while concerns have been raised around his defensive efforts.
Here’s what we know about Joseph Suaalii’s potential departure from the Sydney Roosters.
Is Joseph Suaalii leaving the Roosters?
According to an initial report from senior reporter Danny Weidler on Channel Nine, there have been internal discussions at Bondi regarding an early exit for Suaalii.
“Roosters officials are starting to discuss the option of allowing Suaalii to leave at the end of the year,” he said.
“The upside for the Roosters is that they will have around $700,000 extra to spend in next year’s salary cap.”
