Matt Rhule recaps Nebraska quarterback play after ‘completely closed’ scrimmage
LINCOLN — The GOAT still got entry to Nebraska football’s first major scrimmage of training camp, but NU coach Matt Rhule otherwise wanted a practice without the watchful eye of the media, high school coaches, former players or even parents.
After the 128-play situational scrimmage, Rhule told reporters that he closed the workout to “completely” to see players let loose.
“I wanted the players to have this space where ‘no one’s watching, let me just go play,'” Rhule said. “You can say what you want, but when your mom, your dad, your sister’s there, there’s an extra little something. I’ve had a lot of guys mention that to me.”
Legendary Husker coach Tom Osborne took in the workout, though.
“Nobody had the guts to tell him to leave,” Rhule joked. “I certainly didn’t.”
Rhule patterned this scrimmage, he said, after practices he conducted with the 2019 Baylor team that played for the Big 12 Championship.
“Veteran group,” Rhule said. “We’re creating situations instead of ‘hey, who’s gonna win?’ I think we’re so competitive that we don’t need that anymore.”
Instead, Rhule said, he wants a team that “stays in the moment” and adeptly handles quick, adverse changes.
Like turnovers. Rhule said little about Saturday’s scrimmage but noted the Husker quarterbacks had “a couple turnovers in areas where I would not like to see them.” Rhule did not mention who and was not asked to specify.
“It’s going to be a fire when you’re out there as a quarterback,” Rhule said, noting junior Heinrich Haarberg, who started last season, is used to it. “Can you handle the fire? I don’t mean to preach out here, but that’s the whole key to young people becoming men or women. You get out in the real world and you start to go into the fire.”
More quick hits from Saturday:
» Left tackle Turner Corcoran was cleared to practice but did not scrimmage, Rhule said, leaving Lincoln Southeast graduate and redshirt freshman Gunnar Gottula to handle most of the left tackle duties. Rhule said Gottula is “excellent” in the run game but needs to get more confident as a pass blocker.
“I say confidence, not ability,” Rhule said, noting his size, 33-inch arms and 81-inch wingspan. “Those are the things you’re looking for. If that guy were in the portal, we’d all be scrambling for him.”
» Kicker Tristan Alvano has returned to the 120-man roster with a yellow jersey. Rhule said NU’s kickers are generally consistent from 47 yards and in, and getting better outside that distance.
» While cornerback Blye Hill (knee) is on the 120-man roster, his timeline for return has not been accelerated, Rhule said. The coach just wants Hill, who had been in the running to start, attending all meetings.
» Cornerback Jeremiah Charles “dinged” his shoulder, said Rhule, who provided no further detail and did not indicate the matter was serious.
» Offensive lineman Jake Peters (lower body) and cornerback Brice Turner (broken hand) will be out for an extended period of time.
