Reunions are a speciality dish in the rock and metal scenes. Over the last few decades reunions have not only been an effective tool to honor many highly regarded legacies in the genre, but they’ve made for some of the highest grossing tours in the business. Take Guns N’ Roses for example, the band reunited with their Not In This Lifetime Tour in 2015 and grossed over 584.2 million by the end of 2019. Sure, Guns N’ Roses are in a league of their own when it comes to their revered status, but there are a plethora of likeminded rock acts whose careers have been completely renewed and effectively emboldened after reunitin
Mötley Crüe, Misfits and Pantera reunions are a few recent examples that have garnered significant attention, and although none of them have grossed the same ticket sales as GNR they’ve been the focal point at some of the biggest rock and metal festivals of the year.
All of this goes to show that reunions are not to be taken lightly in rock and metal, and as the years go by there are seemingly less bands in the scene that could benefit from reuniting that haven’t already done so. However, if there’s still one ‘White While’ reunion so to speak it has to be Sepultura.
The Brazilian metal outfit founded by the Cavalera brothers Max and Igor, has been one of the most influential and important bands in the extreme music genre. The band’s approach to heavy songwriting is routinely heard throughout corners of modern metal and hardcore music with albums Arise, Chaos A.D., and Roots which carry the majority of the band’s highly revered legacy.
While Sepultura is still an active band and has been long after the Cavalera brothers left, only half of the band’s classic lineup remains with guitarist Andreas Kisser and bassist Paulo Xisto Pinto Júnior. Vocalist Derrick Green has fronted the band ever since Max’s exit, and although he’s put out a a number of incredible and formidable records with the group, particularly 2020’s Quadra, many fans have yearned for the original Sepultura lineup to make a return.
It just so happens that now is the best and possibly only opportunity for this to happen, as Sepultura are currently on the out with their farewell tour. Since the tour’s announcements there have been talks about a potential reunion opportunity, as both Kisser and Max Cavalera have expressed they’re open to the idea. In a recent interview Max was asked about the possibility of reuniting with Sepultura stating, “I think I’m gonna let things happen the way they’re gonna happen. I’m not gonna force anything, and if there comes a time where we feel that we should make a reunion — okay, fine, as long as we do it the right way.
