Listen to what the Cardinals’ head coach said following their triumph to start off the Baha Mar Hoops Summer League.
Louisville, Ky. – The Pat Kelsey era of the Louisville men’s basketball team may not begin officially for another three months, but we got a great first look at the Cardinals on Tuesday.
The Cardinals were relentless and effective in their first of two preseason games as part of a summer abroad trip to the Bahamas, defeating Bahamas Select 111-59 on Tuesday night in Nassau.
Here’s what head coach Pat Kelsey said after the win:
It was just nice to play against someone else. We’ve been beating up on one other for the past two months. It felt great to put on the uniforms for the first time, be under the bright lights, and play a genuine game. I was proud of our guys. When you look at the stat sheet in a game like that, it’s easy to start playing me ball, which our team didn’t do. They kept giving up decent shots in exchange for amazing shots, which made me proud.
We’re continuously harping on the unit’s power, right? It’s incredible how much can be accomplished when no one cares who gets the credit. We celebrate these things. Listen, this team was talented. They had a youngster who scored 53 points against a very solid Division I squad a few days back. But they haven’t really been practicing for two months. It’s a little like an All-Star team. We’ll certainly face much, much stronger defenders, but it would have been so simple for players to start going one-on-one. It was great to see everyone sharing the ball. We thought we played hard and crashed the offensive glass to our standards. They leak a lot, and I thought the transition defense might have been a little better. That is something we will handle in practice tomorrow.
