Live updates, results: U.S. Olympic track and field trials, Day 7

After two rest days, the action returns to Hayward Field on Thursday with Day 7 of the U.S. Olympic trials for track and field.

Thursday’s schedule brings finals in the women’s discus and the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. The sprint stars also will be on the track for a bevy of qualifying events, from the semifinals of the men’s 110-meter hurdles to the men’s and women’s 200 meters to the 400 hurdles for both the men and women.

Men’s 800 meters, round 1: Thursday’s action is underway with heats of the men’s 800 meters. Bryce Hoppel and Hobbs Kessler go 1-2 at the finish line in the first heat of 800 qualifying. Hoppel crosses in 1 minute, 46.83 seconds and Kessler is just behind at 1:46.85. Both advance automatically to the semifinals, along with these four runners from that first heat: Wes Ferguson (1:47.08), Darius Kipyego (1:47.18), Charles Jones (1:47.31) and Cass Elliott (1:47.41). … In heat 2, Sam Whitmarsh passes early leader Darius Smallwood down the home stretch to win it in 1:46.13. Isaiah Harris crosses second in 1:46.14, followed by Camden Marshall in 1:46.33. Brannon Kidder takes fourth in 1:46.48, Sam Ellis (1:46.65) is fifth and Smallwood fades to sixth (1:46.68) but still snags an automatic qualifier spot into the semifinals. … Clayton Murphy surges to the front in the final 100 meters and wins the third heat in 1:47.05. Brandon Miller places second in 1:47.10, with Jonah Koech third in 1:47.26. Also moving through to the semfinals are Eric Holt (1:47.28), Zephaniah Carico-Mclennan (1:48.39) and Josh Hoey (1:48.40). … Several runners finish in a pack in the fourth heat. Tinoda Matsatsa winds up the winner in 1:46.73, with Abraham Alvarado narrowly behind in 1:46.76. Shane Cohen finishes third in 1:46.83, followed by Isaiah Jewett in 1:46.84. Nick Plant is fifth in 1:46.88 and Matt Wisner grabs the last auto qualifier spot by placing sixth in 1:46.95. Benjamin Allen finishes seventh, but his time of 1:47.29 is good enough to move him through to the semis. The other two time qualifiers are Bobby Poynter (1:46.95) and Vincent Crisp (1:47.12) from heat 2.
