ATHLETICS Shericka Jackson sparks music speculation with surprise studio visit

World 200m champion Shericka Jackson left fans wondering if she is also joining the bandwagon of athletes recording music when she visited a studio in Jamaica.

Jackson walked in on a recording session for singer Leroy Brown, led by legendary drummer Sly Dunbar, in Kingston to the surprise of the artistes who were working on the song Africa is Calling.

Brown is backed on Africa is Calling by Dunbar, trumpeter Vivian Scott, keyboardist Paul “Wrongmove” Crosdale, and bassist Glen Browne.

“(Singer) Winston Dias and I were talking about it (repatriation to Africa) and he was excited about the idea, so we shared the cost of producing it. Soon as I tapped my feet Sly arranged the drum track and we all went to work,” Brown said regarding the inspiration behind the song.

Jackson is not known to hold an interest in singing but her visit sparked the speculation. Jamaican sprint king Usain Bolt has been trying his hand in music since his retirement.

Bolt released a new track in collaboration with Jamaican rising music star D-Major named, ‘Unstoppable’ in September which has so far attracted over 342,000 views on YouTube.

Jackson is preparing for what will be a busy 2024 season that will see her attempt to win her first Olympics gold in 200m after a brilliant 2023 over the distance.

The 29-year-old shrugged off competition from Sha’Carri Richardson and compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce to retain her 200m crown at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest where she also won silver in 100m.
