Roar skipper confirms departure after five years in Brisbane: ‘The most wonderful adventure of my life’

The Brisbane Roar have formally acknowledged the departure of club captain Tom Aldred, marking the end of the Englishman’s five-year stint in Queensland.

After joining the Roar in 2019, Aldred was immediately awarded the armband ahead of his debut season in the Isuzu UTE A-League, and he went on to play 116 games for the team.

Just the sixth captain in Brisbane’s history, Aldred quickly established himself as a fan favourite among the Roar fans, and as such, the Englishman wrote a heartfelt farewell to those who supported him during his tenure at the club.

“I want to thank you all for your support over the past five years,” Aldred stated in an open letter to the fans. “It has been a delight and honour to lead this outstanding club.

“This has been the most amazing adventure of my life. From relocating from the other side of the world to being the first foreign captain, playing over 100 A-League games, obtaining an Australian citizen, and, most importantly, proudly representing Brisbane and Queensland.

He went on to say, “Thank you to all of the players and staff with whom I have worked during my career. As a leader, I’ve always felt that I had your full support. For the younger players, I hope I was able to influence you in some manner to aid your career progress.

“It is time for me to move on and continue my football career. I’m leaving as a proud Australian citizen and Brisbane Roar fan. I wish the team and organisation continued success and look forward to seeing the games next season.”
