Washington Commander’s ‘Most Notable Departure’ Impacts Secondary
Who was the Commanders’ most significant departure this offseason?

The Washington Commanders underwent an offseason revamp, dismantling the franchise from top to bottom. They didn’t do it literally, but it came close. With new ownership, a new coaching staff, and a good 2024 NFL Draft, returning the fewest number of players from the previous season only made sense.

The roster change was real, and considering the team’s 4-13 record from last season, it seems necessary to move forward. in doing so, the team was going to lose some contributors they might find themselves missing next season, but who was the “most notable” departure?

According to CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan, safety Kamren Curl is the Commander’s most consequential departure.

“Despite being a former seventh-round pick, Kamren Curl blossomed into an impactful safety in Washington’s secondary,” Sullivan stated. “He started 53 out of 60 games in his career, including all 16 last season. In 2023, he recorded 115 tackles with five pass breakups, matching his career high. In March, he signed a two-year deal with the Rams.”

Curl was not a player who would turn heads by intercepting passes, but he was a reliable and versatile defensive back. Losing the safety was part of a massive roster upheaval, and there will now be opportunities for other starter-level players to emerge as the team enters a new era.

With Dan Quinn, a former defensive coordinator for the Commanders’ division foe Dallas Cowboys, coming over as head coach, it would have been intriguing to have the former Washington safety on the roster to see how his strategy would have suited.

In any case, Curl chose his new destination and may be in a position to make a significant impact over the next two seasons.
