Four more players leave Orlando Pirates.
The Orlando Pirates’ revolving door continued to spin on Friday, as the Soweto giants announced the departure of four more players.
This major exodus follows the previous departures of striker Souaibou Marou and midfielder Fortune Makaringe, with reports circulating that more established names may also depart.
The shake-up also suggests that head coach Jose Riveiro will be overhauling his squad significantly. Sergio Almenara, the latter’s first assistant coach, also left the club by mutual consent two days after the Pirates successfully defended their Nedbank Cup championship.
In a statement, the club said: “As the football season comes to a conclusion, we not only recognise the end of our campaign but also say goodbye to some of our esteemed players.
Orlando Pirates have confirmed that Richard Ofori, Siyabonga Mpontshane, Thabang Monare, and Kermit Erasmus will leave the club on June 30.
“It is with a deep sense of gratitude that we reflect on the contributions of these players during their time with us.”
Ofori, who joined the Buccaneers in 2020 from Maritzburg United, “quickly became a cornerstone” of the club’s defence. His commanding presence anchored the backline for 58 appearances; the Ghanaian goalie registered 29 clean sheets while conceding 36 goals.
“Yet, his influence extended beyond the pitch. Richard was a unifying force within the squad, and his four years here have left us with countless positive memories,” said Pirates.
Pirates also said goodbye to Mpontshane, who spent nine seasons at the club. The 38-year-old former Platinum Stars goalie featured in over 85 matches for Bucs, conceding 75 goals while keeping 34 clean sheets. “His tenure has been marked by exceptional discipline and dedication, making him one of our most respected and appreciated members of the team.”
Monare, on the other hand, is leaving Pirates after four successful years with the club, which he joined from Bidvest Wits. He made 93 appearances for the Soweto giants, scoring one goal and assisting twice.
“From the moment he came into the club, the 34-year-old gave it his all. Desh embodies hard labour and resilience.Monare departs the club with two Nedbank trophies, two MTN8 Cups, and a silver CAF Confederation Cup medal.”
Meanwhile, Erasmus’ second tenure with the Pirates has ended. The striker, who returned to the club from Mamelodi Sundowns after nine years, leaves as a bittersweet ‘legend’.
“…[he] made an immediate impact by helping us win the MTN8 title.” With almost 117 games under his belt in Pirates colours, Romeo has confirmed his legendary reputation at the club,” stated Bucs, as the striker scored 26 goals and assisted 19 times.
“We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to these players for their steadfast devotion and commitment to the organisation. We wish them all the best in their future undertakings.
